Incendiary Rounds
Incendiary projectiles, in particular those intended for armor penetration, are more effective if they explode after penetrating a surface layer, so as to explode inside the target. Also, targets with onboard electronics or computers can be damaged by metal fragments when they explode on the surface. Ignition is often delayed by varying means until after impact.
Below is on 'commercial' incendiary which has a different compound than mil-spec ammo. (AD) INCENDIARY AMMUNITION INCENDIARY AMMUNITION IS LOADED WITH A BARIUM/ALUMINUM COMPOUND IN THE FORWARD PORTION OF THE PROJECTILE. WHEN THE PROJECTILE STRIKES A RELATIVELY SOLID OBJECT IT DETONATES WITH A BRIGHT FLASH AT APPROXIMATELY 3,000 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT TO IGNITE COMBUSTIBLE MATERIAL. CAUTION MUST BE EXERCISED WHEN FIRING THESE ROUNDS TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL BRUSH FIRES. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THEY BE USED AT AN APPROVED FIRING RANGE. CHECK YOUR STATE LAWS CONCERNING LAWFUL FIRING OF THIS AMMUNITION. http://www.hi-vel.com/Catalog__21/In...mmunition.html .50 BMG API Vs. 18 Hard Drives http://www.hardocp.com/news.html?new...HVzaWFzdCwsLDE= And.......from Wiki-Answers : Q: How WELL do incendiary rounds work? Somewhat. Incendiary rounds will NOT ignite everything that is shot with it. And it may take several or hundreds of rounds to start a good fire quickly. Recently on the Discovery Channel "Mythbusters", they tried to replicate a scene in a James Bond movie where he shoots a Propane tank with his pistol and it explodes. They could not get a gas tank to explode by shooting it with a regular pistol or with indendiary rounds. They even fired a round into the tank to get it to disperse the gas and fired another round through the gas. That surpised me. During WW1, the Germans climbed that the Allied pilots were firing "explosive rounds" that caused their airplanes to burn so easily. I don't know if this was a problem with language translation but they were using indendiary rounds. WW1 pilots also loaded indendiary rounds when they wanted to shoot down a balloon, which was filled with explosive hydrogen gas. So I guess they worked in those cases. |
Re: Incendiary Rounds
I've bought incendiary rounds in a few different calibers from Ammunition To Go. Haven't shot any off yet and may never unless......

Re: Incendiary Rounds
Wait until some whack-job goes on a shooting spree using this stuff. Even though it won't exactly do what it is advertised to, the media will change the facts to suit their agenda and be sure to let all of us know. I could see them giving this ammo an uber glorified name like "tank killers" or some such.
Let's not forget about them .50 cal heat seekers! |
